Strategies for Successful Online Learners

Two strategies for successful online learners include goal setting and creating a study plan. Goals are clearly defined objectives such as studying each day or working on a project each day. These goals can then be incorporated into a study plan along with scheduling.

A study plan is a clear description of the student’s mission or overarching goal and includes detailed objectives needed to accomplish that mission (Ruggiero, 2012). The study plan is simple enough to follow on a daily and should include due dates, areas of extra work, and resources needed. The plan should be writing down such that goals can be assessed as the student move’s through the course including:

Scheduling with due dates
Defines objectives for project and weekly work completion
Defines the work effort and its intended results for the course
Keeps student focused on area of study (Ruggiero, 2012).

By incorporating goals into a study plan, the student will have a strong two-part strategy for course completion and success.

Another important aspect for succeeding in school is time management. The modern student is faced with many challenges especially in a distance learning environment. Juggling one’s time between work, school and for some even children; can be complicated and arduous. The good news is that one can manage their time and succeed in their academics. This task is not beyond anyone’s ability.

When one first begins his or her studies, they must also define for themselves a schedule. The creation of a schedule that takes a realistic account of one’s day-to-day activities will be necessary for an individual to succeed in his or her academic career. Many students will make a schedule for themselves which is not realistic. For example, students will create a schedule that does not consider enough time for sleep or enough time for study. Often these unrealistic expectations or schedule problems will be created purely by accident, but none the less will cause serious academic problems.

The best way to avoid bad time management is to be honest. Being honest with oneself will avoid many of the time management pitfalls. For instance, if one knows that he or she is a slow reader, then they should not schedule a short amount of time for studying. As well, if one is not proficient in math, then they should make sure they supply themselves with ample time to study and learn. It is better to be honest and set realistic expectations then to be unrealistic and lose points and receive lower grades.
